A Peebles-based initiative is aiming to raise money for vulnerable members of society with a book sale at the Leckie Church Hall this weekend.
You Can Cook is organising its first ever fundraiser with the hope of raising enough cash to help support individuals and families from low income and disadvantaged groups in the Borders.
Organiser Bosco Santimano told the Peeblesshire News: “In the past few years we have observed an overwhelming increase of financial hardships faced by families due to benefit cuts, unemployment and mental health issues.
“As a small organisation we are ideally placed to help these groups due to the projects we deliver locally. All monies raised on the day will go towards this cause and we will be supporting and helping the groups in a variety of ways from providing free fresh vegetables, fruits, eggs and other foods to running cookery sessions, whereby they can learn to cook the foods we deliver.
“Your support is essential in helping some members, including children of our community eat nutritious meals. This will go a long way in providing some support to families facing hardships due to austerity cuts imposed on the most vulnerable in our society.”
The event is supported by Bookdonors, a Borders based social enterprise and many other individuals from the community.
Boso said: “Please come along and bring a friend/family member/neighbour to support this cause for your community. There will be coffee, Tea, delicious home baking a seeds and plants sale, laughter, Yoga and much more.”
The day starts at 10am and runs until 4pm at the Leckie Church Hall, Peebles, on Saturday, May 28.
