GALASHIELS girl Erin Gray is running, cycling and swimming in a bid to raise funds for the children's charity, Rainbow Trust.

The eight-year-old has competed in three junior triathlons across the region this summer.

And she collected sponsorship, so far reaching almost £700, ahead of her final competition in Peebles.

Erin was inspired by Doncaster youngster Bailey Matthews who, despite having cerebral palsy, has also been completing fundraising triathlons.

Erin told us: "After watching Sports Personality of the Year and seeing Bailey Matthews I wanted to try and raise money for children who might not live as long as me because they are poorly.

"That is why I chose the Rainbow Trust”.

Erin was one of over 100 youngsters between the ages of eight and 12 who took part in the inaugural Live Borders junior triathlon series this year.

The young triathletes have enthusiastically competed in the especially organised junior events which let them experience one of the UK’s biggest growth sports.

The junior events are a new edition to the Live Borders Triathlon series, which runs from April to September each year, with events in Galashiels, Selkirk, Peebles, Hawick, Kelso and Eyemouth.

Ewan Jackson, Live Borders Chief Executive, is delighted with the success of the junior series.

He said: "It is fantastic to see so many youngsters try triathlon.

"Our adult events are a well-established series which draws participants from across the Scottish Borders and beyond.

"A junior series was the natural progression and we are delighted that Erin was dedicated to her cause and took part in all three to raise money for the Rainbow Trust.

"Well done Erin!”

The Rainbow Trust supports families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness.

There are an estimated 49,000 children in the UK living with a life limiting or life threatening condition who require palliative care.

Erin is continuing to raise money for the Rainbow Trust.
