PEEBLES will roll out the red carpet for mums next month at their new summer sevens tournament.

The Gytes club announced back in April that they would move their traditional end of season sevens to a new date in August.

It is hoped the pre-season tournament will produce a more exciting tournament and an even bigger crowd.

And organisers hope the summer sunshine will also encourage the many mums from the town's age-group teams to pull on their frocks and hats to enjoy Ladies Day.

Chairman Graham Bell told the Peeblesshire News: "For the first time we will be putting on our annual sevens tournament in August - yes it will be warmer, yes we should have less rain but, definitely there will be more fun and some great rugby.

"There will be events all weekend with Saturday being the showcase sevens day.

"The Saturday will also be Ladies Day at Peebles Rugby - so come on ladies, join in the fun and put on your best fascinator.

"It's a great chance to pamper all the ladies that put an enormous amount into the club and also to celebrate all of the wonderful women in the broader Peebles community.

“We especially want to spoil all the dedicated, hardworking mums that look after all our youth players, from Piranhas through to our partnership Peebles High School and our senior U18s Colts squads.”

A Ladies Lunch is being held in the tournament marquee ahead of kick off.

And a post-tournament concert will also take place in the giant tent.

A total of 16 teams will compete at the Gytes on Saturday, August 6 with Selkirk returning to defend the title they won just over three months ago.

Although Peebles are just three weeks into their pre-season training the players are looking forward to the tournament.

Donald Anderson said: "Quite a few clubs have used the sevens as a pre season tournament in the past, to sharpen up and help with match fitness.

"The skills and sharpness required stands you in good stead for the 15 a side game as well.

"Balls skills, passing, and looking to offload are all things any rugby players should be focussing on again and again anyway. If the early start helps us to hit the ground running, that can only be a good thing.”

Tickets for the August 6 tournament are priced at £10 for adults with children under 12 free.

Bookings for the Ladies Lunch are also being taken with further information available at info@peeblesrfc.org.
