THE home of the St Ronan's Border Games Week's fun fair has had to be changed, after the council deemed the conditions to be too wet.

Victoria Park in Innerleithen was set to host the carnival but the poor weather forecast has meant it has had to be moved to the nearby car park.

Councillor Gavin Logan for Tweeddale East said: "It's a pity the fair has had to be moved, but I think it is the most sensible option.

"The council has spent a lot of money on the park and we wouldn't want to churn it up.

"In my opinion it's not a big deal, I am supportive of it.

"It works quite well," he added. "It's been put on there before and it has been successful."

For several years concerns have been raised about the potential damage to the ground at Victoria Park and its drainage system, prompting many to call for the fair to be moved.

But Coun Logan said: "It is a bit restricted but it's a good place for it. We've had many successful fairs in the park when the weather has been better."

The council started drainage works in 2010 and spent around £12,000 during the three-year project.

The event was moved to the same plot in 2012 to prevent the grass from being ruined due to the wet weather, but the council hopes the move won't dampen the spirits of the visitors.

A spokesperson for Scottish Borders Council said: "Due to the wet ground conditions and poor weather forecast it's not been possible for the fun fair to use the pitches or grass areas at Victoria Park.

"We spoke to the owners of the fun fair who have agreed to use the car park at the west end of the park, as they did in similar circumstances in 2012.

"This move is important to prevent damage to the park.

"The council would like to thank the fun fair operators, St Ronan's Border Games Week Committee and members of the community, and hopes everyone has a Games Week to remember."
