BORDERS MSP Christine Grahame said she is "delighted" after two major Peebles bus routes were secured.

The MSP for Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale, met with the Managing Director of First Scotland East last month, to discuss the proposed changes to the 90a and 90b routes.

Last week the Peeblesshire News reported that local firm BARC are to take over the routes and Ms Grahame is pleased a solution has been found.

She said: "I am delighted that Peebles is keeping its highly valued town service, and I congratulate BARC Coach Hire on securing the contract.

"I met with Paul McGowan, Managing Director of First Scotland East, last month to discuss their proposed changes to routes right across the Borders.

"Although a number of routes were affected, the proposed removal of the 90a and 90b were my biggest concern. I know the town service is relied on by hundreds of residents, often as their only means to get to the shops, GP appointments, and to connect the X62," she added.

"After that meeting I began exploring options to preserve the route. I am delighted that BARC – a well-known and established local operator – have now stepped in to save the town service."

Several routes looked uncertain, but the MSP also received assurance from First that the X62 is not affected by any changes and the company will continue to operate this service.
