HUNDREDS of scones have been baked, pots of jam prepped, and jars of cream whipped, for the annual Wayside Market this weekend.

The majestic Neidpath Castle is the setting for the much-loved market, hosted by the Lyne and Manor Church, tomorrow.

Neidpath Castle has not been open to the public for some years but anyone attending will have the rare opportunity to walk round the ancient building and peek into its grand halls and vaults.

You might even catch a glimpse of the ghost of Jean Douglas who is said to haunt the grounds! She is reputed to appear clad in a full-length brown dress with a large white collar, after dying of a broken heart when her lover was banished.

The market offers the famed baking by the ladies of Lyne and Manor - with the cream teas always proving popular - and fresh produce and plants from the Manor gardens, as well as bric-a-brac, hats, jewellery, scarves, books, and toys.

There are also games and competitions, a puppet show, pony rides, and live music, which makes it a great family day out.

Organisers hope for sunshine but most of the attractions will be tented, just in case.

They also wish to thank the Wemyss family, who own the ancient castle, for allowing the market to take place within their picturesque grounds.

Anyone wishing to come along and join in the fun can do so from 2pm tomorrow afternoon.

There is a small car park at the castle but there will be plenty of parking in the main car park in Neidpath Road, where free taxis to and from the castle will be provided.
