AUTHOR and journalist Max Glaskin is bringing his Cycling Science bicycle tour to the region and to the Beyond Borders International Festival of Literature later this month.

The event takes place on the weekend of August 27-28 and consists of family-friendly rides exploring the strange science of cycling, with exciting experiments and bizarre demonstrations.

Max told the Peeblesshire News: “Most people look at a bike and can see how it works, but on this gentle ride they’ll understand why it works.
“We take it for granted, but some of the science is so weird it’s almost magic.”

These cycle rides will be taking place between 8.30am and 10.30am on both days, departing from and returning to Traquair House in time for the beginning of the remaining festival sessions.

The rides are part of the weekend’s morning programme, which also includes a storytelling walk with local storyteller Mary Kenny, which features stories from across the globe; a foraging walk with local writer and forager Fi Martynoga and author Fiona Bird and – in a new addition to this year’s festival – meditation practice with human rights barrister Rajesh Rai.

Max added: “The bicycle tour works for all kinds of cyclists, from club riders to commuters, youngsters and leisure cyclists – it adds to the pleasure of cycling.

“Everyone learns a little. It’s a classroom on two wheels where the teacher wobbles a bit.”
