AN over 50s sports team in Peebles is appealing for new members as the current crop of players need a rest.

Since April, Peebles Walking Football Team has meet each week in the Drill Hall community centre.

But the ageing attackers and silver-haired strikers are down to only seven or eight regulars.

And the lack of numbers means they have to continue non-stop throughout the entire one-hour training matches.

Colin McDonald from the walking football club told us: "It is hard playing for a whole hour when you get to our age.

"If you have enough players you can have rolling substitutes and you get a chance to get your breath back.

"People might think walking football isn't all that tiring but it is a really good fitness workout."

Walking football follows the same rules as a normal game apart from players aren't allowed to run, only walk.

It is considered an ideal sport for people looking to improve their fitness and enjoy a game at a pace they find more suited to their needs.

Since the Peebles team was formed earlier this year they have competed in tournaments in both Edinburgh and Galashiels.

And they have also received an invitation to play in an international tournament in Portugal next year.

But to prevent them from burning out a few new players are needed for the Friday afternoon kickabouts.

Mr McDonald added: "Anyone over the age of 50 would be made most welcome.

"It's a friendly atmosphere and we usually meet up for a chat before each session.

"We would love to see some new faces come along and enjoy walking football with us - it's a great way to stay in shape."

The weekly sessions take place between 3pm and 4pm ever Friday at the Drill Hall on Walkershaugh.
