THEY'RE not the Floral Gateway Champion of Champions for no reason.

Bonnie Peebles volunteers were out in force again last week on a major replanting exercise.

And they will are pulling their gardening gloves back on this week too for some shrub cutting back and further bulb planting.

Since its formation exactly a decade ago, Bonnie Peebles has transformed neglected areas of the town and created a lasting impression for visitors.

As well as creating dozens of planting areas they have also added eye-catching sculptures - and landed numerous awards for their efforts.

Last week a total of 11 volunteers replanted around 1000 polyanthus and tulip bulbs in the Edinburgh Road 'train beds', on School Brae, in the Northgate gardens, beside the Gun Shed and also the beds at Haylodge and the Swimming Pool.

Avril Murray from Bonnie Peebles told us: "It takes a lot of work to keep on top of all the beds but we have a good team.

"To save on costs we lift the polyanthus each year to store in John Swanson's garden before replanting them.

"because of the growing number of areas where we plant we have bought an extra 200 plants this year."

One new area which was planted last week is the site for the forthcoming Scott Brash statue next to Edinburgh Road.

Bonnie Peebles will have a final fundraising evening tonight at Peebles Rugby Club ahead of the sculpture being unveiled around the end of the year.

The race night is due to start at 7.30pm.
