THEY'RE getting all pumped up in Cardrona as they bid for a new bike track.

Cyclists in and around the village have embarked on a fundraising mission to replace the current facility with a state-of-the-art track to cater for all ages.

Club riders from Peebles and Innerleithen have also joined the peloton to push for a new pump track.

Local company Bikescape have surveyed the current set up on the edge of the village.

They believe it will cost around £16,000 for an all-ability pump track to be installed.

And they have waived all consultation, design and project management fees in an effort to make the project more achievable.

Paul Milne from Bikescape told us: "There is definitely a need for a pump track somewhere in the Tweed Valley.

"We have been working in Canada and when we came back to Scotland saw how far behind we are these other countries when it comes to bike facilities.

"Pump tracks offer a compact, controlled facility providing riders of all ages and abilities with a progressive learning environment.

"Riders can learn new skills as well as develop existing ones, including jumping, pumping, manualling and cornering that can be directly transferred to any discipline of cycling.

"Pump tracks can be used by toddlers on scoot bikes right up to seasoned professionals and everyone in-between."

Bikescape has been working with the Cardrona Village Association over the past few months to hatch a plan for replacing the current facility.

And they have developed detailed drawings of a replacement pump track.

A fundraising campaign - through crowdfunders - has already surpassed £4,000.

But a further £12,000 will be required for the project to start.

Paul added: "We are aiming to build a modern facility with multiple line choice, lapping capability and with low maintenance requirements.

This is an opportunity for an excellent facility which will cater for cyclists of all ages throughout the Tweed Valley.

"There is a lot of enthusiasm and support behind the project but we need more."

Since launching the project several leading mountain bike riders have backed the bid.

And organisers of the country's largest cycling festival, TweedLove, have also put their weight behind the new facility.

A spokesman for TweedLove said: "A facility like this will make a big, big difference to a lot of people in the valley.

"We already have fantastic depth of young riding talent coming up, but we’re missing the opportunities for them to learn certain skills – and this track will help plug that hole.

"It will also be another great asset for the area – helping us claim the title as the best bike riding destination in the UK."
