AN Easyjet flight travelling from Edinburgh to Hamburg has made an emergency landing at Newcastle Airport.

Flight EZY6931 departed from Edinburgh bound for the German city of Hamburg at 12.40pm today (Monday, November 28), but touched down 40 minutes later at Newcastle Airport in the north east of England at 1.20pm.

The reason given for the divert is due to a 'technical issue' after unconfirmed reports of an electrical fire and fumes within the aircraft.

After making the emergency landing, the plane was met by Fire and Emergency crews for the passengers to disembark safely.

A spokesperson from Newcastle Airport told us: "We can confirm the aircraft has landed safely. Fire Crews have attended the aircraft as a standard procedure."

Passengers may face a lengthy wait while a replacement aircraft is flown in to help complete the journey to Hamburg.

A spokesman from Easyjet said: “easyJet can confirm that flight EZY6931 from Edinburgh to Hamburg on November 28 diverted to Newcastle as a precautionary measure only due to a technical issue.

“The aircraft landed safely and was met by emergency services in line with our procedures.

“The safety of its passengers and crew is easyJet's highest priority and easyJet operates its fleet of aircraft in strict compliance with all manufacturers’ guidelines.

“We apologise to passengers for the resulting delay.”
