HOPES are high that the next Andy Murray will come from Peebles following last week's game-winning return to fund new courts.

Members of the town's Common Good Committee unanimously agreed to lob over the final £10,000 required by Peebles Lawn Tennis Club for work begin their ambitious upgrade of facilities.

The Glen Road club wants to serve up three resurfaced courts, new floodlighting and a replacement perimeter fence.

The £200,000 plans are already being supported by Sportscotland, the Lawn Tennis Association, Tennis Scotland and the Landfill Communities Fund.

Councillor Gavin Logan was amongst the committee members who gave the ace plans the thumbs up. He told us: "This is a major boost for tennis in Peebles and the wider Borders.

"With the popularity we are currently seeing in tennis, we need better facilities locally if we are to produce the next Andy Murray.

"It would be great if a young player from Peebles could now follow in Andy's footsteps."

The current courts at Peebles are prone to flooding after spells of heavy rain.

Competitions and league matches are regularly cancelled due to water-logging.

It is hoped the new all-weather surfaces, as well as floodlights, will see membership grow from the current 145 to 250 by next summer.

The club already has more than 50 children taking part in the various coaching initiatives with Marc Kinsey.

And club president Rob Smith and his team have ambitious plans to expand the player pathway further.

Councillor Logan added: "The club has to be applauded on the plans they have for developing tennis in the town."

A full planning application for the development work was submitted this week.

And it will be considered by Scottish Borders Council over the coming weeks.

Peebles Lawn Tennis Club hopes to have the refurbishment work completed by next summer.
