THE Whipman Play Society in West Linton is to have a vote to see if the Whipman’s Lass should be elected for future festivals.
A general meeting will be held on Monday, January 23 to discuss the proposed change to Clause 3(a) of the Constitution.
The suggestion has been met with mixed views in the community according to the society’s chairman Hamish Dykes. He said: “There has been a group within the village who want to see a change to the constitution and want to see the Whipman’s Lass elected. Some people have said it is sexist to go against the change but I don’t think that is the case.
“Historically the Whipman has selected the Lass to help him carry out his duties and generally it has been a friend or girlfriend.
“As chairman of the organisation I am keeping a fairly open mind, because it’s important that everyone’s views are taken into account.
“But most of the committee and ex-principals are not in favour of the change. The proposed change is not just about tradition, but also about practicality.”
