MORE than £1000 will be presented to four different charities in Peebles following a hugely successful Torchlight Procession at New Year.

An estimated 2,000 people took part in the Hogmanay event, despite wet weather.

Organisers of the Costa Peebles Hogmanay Torchlight Procession have now counted up the proceeds, generated by the sale of torches and support from local business, and will divide £1,100 between the selected good causes.

Neil Dalgleish, from the locally-based organisers Hillside Outside, told us: "We’re proud that the event was such a safely run success and has raised some well-deserved funds for the charities.

"Huge thanks to all who made it possible and we hope it will become part of the tradition of New Year in Peebles.”

The proceeds will go to the Peebles Beltane organisation, the Peebles Christmas Lights Association, the Peebles Round Table and the Peebles Peace Group.

Paul Ackerman of Peebles and District Round Table said: "We were pleased to be involved again this year - it's a great event which draws the community together at the end of the year, provides a fantastic spectacle in the centre of the town, and with the added bonus of raising money for charity."
