SCOTTISH folk icon Ronnie Browne is all set to revisit Peebles next month for a one-off non-musical performance.

The 'Meeting Ronnie' event will demonstrate that there is so much more to him than just singing songs.

The last time he visited Tweeddale, his appearance on stage was overshadowed by a rather drunk Oliver Reed, admitting it was "not one of the highlights of my long and diverse lifetime".

The incident occurred after Ronnie took on an acting roll in a low budget film called the Bruce back in 1995 alongside Reed, Brian Blessed and Wolf from Gladiators.

Ronnie said: "I did my first stint as an actor at Blackness Castle and it quickly dawned on me that I wasn’t a good one.

"After I had officiated at the World Premieres of the film in Glasgow and Edinburgh in 1996 we then took it down to Peebles.

"After spending most of the afternoon in his favourite hostelry in the town Mr Reed arrived at the hall five minutes early, just as I was delivering my speech. He burst through the door to my right and pulled himself up onto the stage where the film screen had been erected.

"His dislike of not being the centre of attention then got the better of him and he proceeded to take of his jacket and tie before pulling his shirt open, sliding the sleeves down over his wrists and performing a jig. I wound up what I had to say and left the hall to the gyrations of this goon."

But Ronnie’s experience has not put him off Peebles and he regularly travels to the town from his home in Midlothian to visit friends.

He is best known as a folk singer and is also an accomplished portraitist.

From 1969 to 1980 he made his home at West Buccleuch Farmhouse, in the Ettrick Valley with his wife Pat and children Gavin and Lauren.

In 1973 the couple adopted their third child Maurice from Balcary House in Hawick. Both Gavin and Maurice attended Selkirk High School during this time.

Meeting Ronnie takes place at the Eastgate Theatre on Saturday, March 4 at 7.30pm. Following an audience question and answer session, Ronnie’s autobiography, Ronnie Browne that guy fae the Corries, will be on sale; followed by a signing session.
