A NEW £8.3 million Primary School was officially opened last week.

Councillor Hamish Stewart helped cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony of Biggar Primary School on Wednesday, March 1.

A special concert organised by staff and pupils across all year groups to mark the occasion was performed in front of invited guests and dignitaries.

Teachers and pupils moved into the new school after the building was handed over by construction workers in August 2015.

Heather Graham, Biggar Primary’s Head Teacher said: "Thanks to all of our parents and special guests who came along to our official opening of the school.

"However, there is no doubt our VIP guests were of course the pupils and staff of Biggar Primary. The pupils worked hard to mark the occasion with a well entertained performance of ‘A Grand Day Out’, a production specifically written to reflect the history and place of the school in the local community of Biggar."

Councillor Hamish Stewart also took to the stage to carry out the official duty of unveiling the plaque.

He said: "I am delighted to open this amazing new building. In my role as a Councillor I have seen many changes in South Lanarkshire over the years and one of the most positive changes is the building and creation of new schools.

"When we have an official opening, I know it’s a very special day for everyone connected with the school. I am sure all of the pupils were as excited as me to take part in the celebration.

"I would like to say thank you to all involved in creating and designing this new school, built as part of Lanarkshire Council’s £820m investment in modernising all of its schools, the largest school build programme in the UK.

"I’d also like to thank Mrs Graham for the leadership you have shown over the years and for continuing to provide high quality education for the children who attend Biggar Primary School."
