A WOMAN died yesterday evening after collapsing during the Mighty Deerstalker obstacle race around Innerleithen.

The 48-year-old was pulled from one of the water obstacles just before 6pm.

Despite the efforts of the Scottish Ambulance Service the woman was pronounced dead on the journey to Borders General Hospital.

A Police Spokesman told us: "We were called to the event following reports of a woman taking unwell.

"The 48-year-old was attended to by the Scottish Ambulance Service but sadly died in the ambulance.

"The woman's death is not being treated as suspicious."

The Mighty Deerstalker has been running since 2004 with thousands of competitors from across the UK completing grueling obstacle courses each year.

Last night's tragedy happened just one mile into the race.

An on-site medic and an off-duty paramedic attempted CPR on the woman next to the water obstacle before an ambulance arrived.

A spokesman for the Mighty Deerstalker said: "We are extremely saddened to confirm that a participant in our Mighty Deerstalker event passed away.

"The participant became unwell close to our event control station and at the location of one of our safety marshals.

"A member of our medical team was on the scene within three minutes as we implemented our response protocols.

"Our heartfelt thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of the deceased."
