Tweeddale Rovers 3

Tweedmouth Amateurs 1

THIS season is still very much alive for Tweeddale Rovers as they continue to compete on four fronts.

That remains the case thanks to the 3-1 win over Tweedmouth Amateurs in the Beveridge Cup first round.

A hat-trick from Grant Wilson, including a free kick and a penalty makes it sound comfortable but Tweedmouth were in the game.

Indeed, they had the wind in their sails when Matty Clark’s wonders strike made it 2-1, but Wilson’s penalty ended their hopes.

The pitch at Kerfield is still struggling after cutting up badly in the previous match against Kelso Thistle and that made it hard for two teams who like to play football.

But both gave it everything resulting in a well contested cup tie.

Chances were at a premium though and it took a set-piece to break the deadlock, which remained the only goal of the first half.

Tweedmouth keeper Adam Stobart came flying out to meet Scott Inglis, but the forwards managed to knock the ball past him before feeling the brunt of his momentum.

The resulting free kick was right on the edge of the box and Wilson bent it perfectly into the top corner, just beyond Stobart’s reach.

Tweedmouth were always a threat and therefore it was important to try and find a second goal.

That did happen when Craig Collin’s driving run cut through the away defence and the diminutive winger laid it on a plate for Wilson who stroked home comfortably.

However, Tweedmouth almost immediately pegged them back.

When the ball made its way to Clark there did not seem to be an immediate danger, but it bobbled up nicely for him and he sent a dipping volley past Ryan Bertram who could do nothing about it.

The two goal cushion was retained, this time irretrievably, and it was again left to Wilson to do the damage from a dead ball. This time it was a spot kick, won by Wilson himself after Blair Meikle had released him wide on the right. Stobart was the guilty party again, and the big keeper guessed the right way for the penalty but could not get a hand to it.
