HEAVY overnight rain failed to put a damper on Selkirk Rhinos’ annual mini-rugby tournament at Philiphaugh on Sunday, when over 400 youngsters made light of the mudbath conditions to guarantee a highly successful event.

Visiting teams came from Hawick, Gala, Melrose, Jed Forest, Duns, Langholm and Peebles, with Selkirk Rhinos fielding sides in all five age-group categories.

Results in each of the finals were as follows:

P3 - winners Duns Grizzlies, runners-up Hawick. P4 - winners Peebles Sharks, runners-up Gala. P5 - winners Kelso, runners-up Selkirk Rhinos. P6 - winners Selkirk Blues, runners-up Kelso. P7 - winners Kelso, runners-up Jed-Forest.

The tournament’s organisers would like to thank Selkirk Rugby Club, Selkirk Football Club and Selkirk Cricket Club for kindly allowing the use of their facilities for players, as well as Border Safeguard and Bankend Services for sponsoring the tournament medals and trophies.

“Without the support of volunteer referees, pitch co-ordinators, committee, sponsors and parents the event would not have proved so successful,” said Selkirk Rhinos secretary Vicki MacFarlane.

“The day raised approximately £1,300 for funds, which is extremely gratifying.”

The medals were presented by Scotland internationalist Lee Jones and Scotland Club XV cap-winner Callum Marshall, both former Selkirk players.
