ORGANISERS of the Peebles Highland Games say the popular event could be under threat unless more volunteers can be found.

Chairman Chris Patterson has voiced his concerns after a number of retirements from the committee has left the group short on numbers.

He is worried that if they can’t be replaced, it could be the end of the road for the iconic sporting occasion, which has run since 1971.

Mr Patterson told us: “In 2012 we issued an appeal for more volunteers through the Peeblesshire News and we had a good response. Around 12-14 came along and eight joined the committee.

“But since 2012 our numbers have been dwindling through members’ ill health and retirement.

“If we don’t get six to eight new committee members we will struggle.”
The event has become a popular fixture on the town’s calendar and hosts the pipe band and heavy events competitions, as well as serving traditional Scottish food and drinks and offering fairground rides.

Mr Patterson added: “One of the main issues is that long-time secretary Bob Abbot retired at the end of last year’s games and a big problem is that we have a number of elderly members on the committee and they can’t do what they would want to do anymore.

“We have got a lot of things we have to do to organise the event, so we would appreciate anyone with any skills.

“There’s a lot of admin to do to hire the park, for example, and we have our programme to organise.

“Physical help would also be needed during the games, but we would be happy to hear from anyone who feels they have something to offer.”
It is hoped that the committee can find around eight new members to boost the team.

“There are only around six meetings before the games and one after,” added Mr Patterson, “so it wouldn’t be a huge commitment.

“It would be great to be able to organise it without four or five people doing most of the work, because then it becomes a burden, instead of being enjoyable.

“We don’t want it to be a burden for any one individual.”

If you can help the Peebles Highland Games Association, an AGM will be held in the Buchan Room at the Tontine Hotel at 7.30pm on Tuesday.
