AROUND 500 mountain bikers descended on Selkirk on Sunday.

And around 100 ultra marathon athletes also started and finished in the town during a weekend of extreme sports.

But it was the next generation who took centre stage on Saturday afternoon as Selkirk Chamber of Trade hosted its annual Family Bike Festival on the High Street.

Dozens of youngsters enjoyed trying out the rollers, ramps, skinnies and snakes throughout the action-packed day.

Experts from the Bike People were on hand to offer tips and support.

While the children enjoyed the two-wheeled challenge the town's first Ultra Marathon took place.

Edinburgh's Hugh McInnes was first back in the full 44 kilometre race, taking a time of 3.37.52. Nick Williamson from Dunbar was second with Tim Darlow claiming third place.

Gillian Carr from Corstorphine was the first lady, ahead of Gala's Fiona Shepherd and Seona Burnett of the Harmeny club.

On the Sunday a total of 331 took part in the Selkirk MTB Marathon, competing over 75km, 50km, or 25km.

And a further 111 completed the three-stage Raid race.
