MELROSE Football Club's Girls Squad experienced some out of the box training on Saturday when they took part in an exclusive BoxSoccer session.

The squad, which has gone from strength to strength since its addition to the club in September 2015 with about 45 attending every week, offers girls only training for Primary One to First Year, led by female coaches.

Following a successful Easter programme, which some of the Melrose girls attended, John Colquhoun, owner of BoxSoccer Training, offered to come along to the club and deliver a session just for them.

John said: "BoxSoccer is delighted to deliver a session to the Melrose Girls.

"It was a great session from a group who were really enthusiastic and willing to learn."

As one of the world's fastest growing sports, many football clubs are setting up female sections to meet the demand.

Coaching like BoxSoccer, which focusses on eight coaching categories covering all aspects of technical development, ensures they are giving the opportunity to train to the same standard as the male squads.

Coach Gordon Clark said: "The girls enjoyed the session, in spite of the weather.

"The impressive young coach continually engaged with them giving them positive feedback throughout and individual pointers where required.

"I especially liked the way that every drill involved ball skills; there's little scope to play football in the street or playground these days so anytime the girls get on the ball is vital.”

Melrose Girls is open to all females from P1 to S1 irrespective of the school attended.
