TRACK stars of the future shone brightly in Peebles this week at the annual County Sports.

The historical Peeblesshire Schools Athletics Association event was held at Whitestone Park on Wednesday evening.

And the large entry and huge crowds proved that athletics is as popular as ever in the region.

Glorious blue skies added to a memorable evening of highly competitive sprints and one-lap races.

Lesley Ireland, secretary of the Peeblesshire Schools Athletics Association, told us: "All the children must be congratulated for the sporting way they ran in their events.

"The Peeblesshire Schools Athletics Association is grateful for the help of all teachers who acted as officials and judges."

Following some closely-fought individual races it was the relays which finished off a fantastic evening's competition.

Priorsford's primary 7 boys lifted the Susan Ridley Quaich after holding off the challenge from St Ronan's and Kingsland.

It was Kingsland's primary 7 girls who broke the tape to win the Horsburgh Memorial Quaich from Priorsford and West Linton.

Priorsford's primary 6 pupils won both the Ramsay Smith’s Coronation Cup and the Dunfermline Building Society Cup.

Eddleston girls triumphed in the small schools relay to win the Bill Moffat Cup.

And it was the boys from Eddleston who proved too fast in their small schools race.

Primary 5 pupils from St Ronan's took home the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Cup.

And Broughton were the winners of the small schools primary 5 relay.
