IT was the appliance of science in Peebles at the weekend as families took part in a range of fun experiments.

More than 400 people of all ages attended the Edinburgh University SCI-FUN Roadshow – part of Borders Science Festival – at Peebles Drill Hall on Saturday.

The interactive mobile science centre invited people to experience science up close through an array of experiments, problem solving challenges, illusions and lots of fun, including – seeing objects apparently roll up hill, holes appearing in hands, solving a crime, trying to pick up a hologram pig plus a competitive Reaction Wall and Power Bike.

Christine Johnston, librarian with Live Borders said: “Science is all around us and our aim is to inspire people of all ages to explore and celebrate the world of science by coming along to events in the fun packed Borders Science Festival programme.

“We are so pleased to have had such fabulous audiences, presenters, partners and sponsors, and we hope everyone enjoys the remainder of the festival.

“The SCI-FUN Roadshow family day was a great success and feedback has been hugely positive.

“It has been described as a ‘very interactive and awesome experience’, ‘a fun and interesting event for kids and adults’, and ‘fantastic to have science accessible in Peebles’.”

The festival, now in its fifth year, is co-ordinated by Live Borders Libraries.

Borders schools have their own programme of more than 50 workshops and activities, delivered in partnership with Scottish Borders Council children and young people’s services.

The 2017 Borders Science Festival is sponsored by local businesses and organisations including the Scottish Government, Live Borders, Scottish Borders Council, Education Scotland, GB Technologies and The Scottish Book Trust.

The Festival started on May 1 and runs until May 31 at locations across the region and most events are free.

Peebles Library is holding a further event, ‘Gravitational Waves: Listening to the sounds of the Universe’ on Tuesday at 7pm. Booking is required for both events.
