IT was double success for Tweeddale MP David Mundell.

Not only did he convincingly retain his seat, but he has been reappointed as Secretary of State for Scotland.

The member for Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale took over the role from Liberal Democrat Alistair Carmichael after the Conservatives won a majority in 2015.

And Mr Mundell says he is “honoured” to be given the position.

He told us: “I am delighted and honoured to have been reappointed Secretary of State for Scotland.

“The Scotland Office has a key role to play as we face the huge tasks that lie ahead of us.

“We need to secure the right Brexit deal for Scotland and the whole of the UK, and we also need to focus on how we bring back powers from Brussels in a way that works best for the Scottish economy.

“We need to work closely with the Scottish Government, and to do that effectively we will need to forge a much more constructive relationship, one based not on politics and press releases but on what is best for Scotland. I’m confident that can happen.

“My door is open and I hope, now the election is over, we can reset the relationship between Scotland’s two governments.”

Prime Minister Theresa May selected her cabinet over the weekend as she looks to form a minority government, propped up by the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) from Northern Ireland.

And Mrs May has made some changes.

Former Education Secretary Michael Gove has been appointed as Environment Secretary and Damian Green has been made First Secretary of State.

Meanwhile, the previous Environment Secretary, Andrea Leadsom, has been appointed as the Leader of the House in the Commons and Liz Truss has moved from justice to chief Treasury Secretary.

Commons Leader David Lidington has taken over as Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor and Chief Treasury Secretary David Gauke has been appointed Work and Pensions Secretary.

However most of the senior roles have stayed the same: Chancellor of the Exchequer - Philip Hammond; Secretary of State for the Home Department - Amber Rudd; Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs - Boris Johnson; Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union - David Davis; Secretary of State for Defence - Michael Fallon; Health Secretary - Jeremy Hunt; Communities Secretary - Sajid Javid; Culture Secretary - Karen Bradley; Secretary of State for International development - Priti Patel; Transport Secretary - Chris Grayling and Business Secretary - Greg Clark.
