THE Royal Company of Archers marched through the town of Biggar last Saturday to compete for the Biggar Jug.
Around 25 assembled outside the Elphinstone Hotel, and walked along Main Street, to Biggar Parks.
The group, who are the Queen’s bodyguards for Scotland, compete for the Jug in the park every six years. They also take part in the historic shoot for the Peebles Silver Arrow every six years, which dates back to June 3, 1796.
The shoot takes place at a range of 180 yards and archers, who shoot in pairs, use traditional wooden long bows and wooden arrows.
All arrows which hit the target (or ‘clout’) score two points each and if no arrows hit the ‘clout’, the winner of an ‘end’ is the archer whose arrow is nearest the centre of the ‘clout’ - scoring one point.
