GOLFERS from Peebles are hoping they can swing to it in a charity challenge tomorrow.

Seven-time club champion Jamie Morris is teaming up with friends Jamie Fenton (34), Robbie Dalgleish (22) and Martin Walker (22) to play 72 holes of golf tomorrow on four different courses in less than 24 hours.

The fairway fundraiser is part of the Macmillan Cancer Support Longest Day Golf Challenge.

Big hitting Jamie will play four consecutive rounds with his The Peebles Elite Golfers team on local courses, starting in the wee small hours at Glencourse, then on to Cardrona, Innerleithen and Peebles.

The event will entail more than 20 miles of walking and around 1,200 shots between them.

Team-mate Martin said: “I am delighted to join Jamie, Jamie and Robbie for our Longest Day Challenge marathon and would encourage members to donate to what is a fantastic cause.

“It is a charity close to many people’s hearts and Macmillan Cancer Support does a wonderful job with families all over Scotland. It’s hard enough doing four rounds on the one course, but we’ve chosen to do their challenge over four courses, which will be great fun but very challenging! Hopefully we can get a few members out cheering us on in our third round at Peebles.”

During the challenge last year, more than 3,000 golfers participated nationwide in terms of four, and helped to raise more than £1.5 million for cancer sufferers.

The top four fundraising teams will be chosen by Macmillan after the deadline on September 4 to take part in a finals event at the Boavista Golf Resort, in the Western Algarve, Portugal.

Peebles Golf Club captain Graham Lowther said: “The guys are all great supporters of the club and it’s nice for us to give them our support in return for their charity venture.

“The club has also supported the Fragile X Society earlier this year through our 125th Anniversary Ball, and managed to raise £3,750, so hopefully we can help the boys achieve their fundraising target of £500.

“I’m sure we all know people who have been affected by cancer so it is certainly a great cause and good that Macmillan choose golf to raise awareness.”
