FIVE Borderers have been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Brian Evans from St Boswells, Mary Brownlie from Broughton and Margaret Driscoll from Eyemouth have been awarded British Empire Medals; Claire Garnett from Peebles has been given an MBE and Kathleen Mason also from Peebles has been awarded an MVO.

Mr Evans was given the accolade for voluntary service in the Borders.

He has been the Honorary Treasurer at the Roxburgh Landward Benevolent Trust (RLBT), since 2001, and has worked with people who fall through the cracks of the welfare state.

Margaret Driscoll was given the award for services to the community in Burnmouth.

Ms Driscoll has been involved in the Eyemouth community for almost 50 years and is a founder and serving member of both the Burnmouth Community Council and the Burnmouth Village Hall Committee. 

Mary Brownlie was selected for the honour for her services to the community of Broughton and upper Tweeddale.

Also in Tweeddale, founder of Peebles Orchestra and Peebles Youth Orchestra Claire Garnett has been awarded an MBE for services to Music in the community in the Scottish Borders.

She told us: “I couldn’t quite believe it when I was told. For 40 years I have just kept my head down and got on with it.”

Kathleen Mason, the Clerk to the Lieutenancy of Tweeddale, was also awarded an MVO.
