AN EDDLESTON man has raised more than £2,000 walking the length of Scotland in 11 days after the death of his friend.

Peter Mulholland decided to take up the challenge of trekking 200 miles from Elgin to Eddleston after his friend Roy McGillivrary died of cancer at the age of 64 last December.

It’s not the first time the 63-year-old accountant has completed an ambitious walking task.

In 2011 he and his son Patrick walked 160 miles in eight and a half days to raise £1,969 for Cancer Research.

Peter told us: “I decided to walk for Cancer Research again due to the death of my friend. Roy grew up in Elgin before moving to Musselburgh, where he dedicated his life to teaching and performing music. Roy was well known in Elgin and I had known him for most of my life.

“I was deeply saddened by his struggle and ultimate death from cancer. His suffering was the catalyst for me to get the ordnance survey maps out and start planning.

“Since my mother’s passing I’ve had very little reason to visit my birth place of Elgin.

“With this in mind, I thought a symbolic gesture would be to walk ‘home from home’ – my hometown of Elgin, Morayshire, to Eddleston, Scottish Borders, the place I now call home.

“I would just like to add my thanks to all the people who supported and encouraged me before and during the walk, especially Calum, Sean and Adeline [friends of his son] for walking all of day two with me.

“My son, Patrick, for walking the last five miles into Eddleston and my wife for supporting me and being there at the end of each walking day.

“It is clear that the need for research into this disease is as great as ever.

“Please help me raise money for this cause by donating. All money raised will go straight to the charity and any amount you can spare, large or small, will truly help.”
