PLANS are being hatched to open Tweeddale’s first ‘Men’s Shed’.

Tweeddale West councillor Kris Chapman (Lib Dem), who is helping to draw up the plans, said: “Despite the early stages of the project, I am very excited by its potential. Men’s Sheds are fantastic projects which work extremely successfully in other parts of the Borders.

“This is a real opportunity here in Tweeddale to support members of our community, to meet with like-minded people and share stories and experiences, as well as providing opportunities for intergenerational work, sharing of skills and ideas between the young and older, along with being able to partner with our schools and local youth clubs.”

Men’s Sheds are known to play a vital role not only in supporting the individuals who attend, but also enhance the wider community too.

Nigel Sargent from Volunteer Centre Borders said: “The Men’s Sheds movement is building across the Borders and our vision is for every town and village in the region to have a Shed.

“This is somewhere men can go to tinker, to make things, to feel a sense of achievement or just to have a cuppa, enjoy some company and a laugh.

“Each shed has developed its own identity and no two are the same.

“They have developed their own rules and everyone and anyone is welcomed. For those involved, new friendships have been formed, new skills developed, hobbies and pastimes have been pursued and numerous projects completed for community groups.

“It is exciting that Tweeddale could soon be the next area to join this movement.”

Scottish Borders Council said: “The council’s community capacity building team is currently working with partners and local community to explore the level of interest in the Tweeddale area for the establishment of a men’s shed.

“Tweeddale is the only locality in the Borders without such an organisation at this time and we are keen to see the benefits of this initiative available for people looking to learn new skills, meet up with like-minded people and enjoy being part of a community project.”
