ORGANISERS of the Peebles Highland Games have hailed this year’s event as a “huge success” following the addition of several new volunteers.

The 45th annual games got off to a flying start on Saturday as crowds flocked to Hay Lodge Park.

A pipe band competition, heavy events competition, Highland dancing competition, malt whisky and Scottish gin tasting and haggis hurling featured among the key events for spectators.

A range of stalls featuring traditional Scottish food, plus children’s fairground rides, bouncy castles, and the popular pipe band street parade offered something for all. The rain even held off too.

Chairman Chris Patterson told us: “This year’s games went off perfectly, and our new committee had a really good time. Following our appeal in the Peeblesshire News earlier this year, the extra volunteers really helped.

“We had a fantastic turnout, with lots of folk through our gates and an increase in programme sales – all of which secure the future of the games.

“The event has had a worldwide appeal.

“On Saturday I spoke to visitors from Canada, France and Germany, who came to see our Highland Games.

“Our haggis hurling event was introduced nearly four years ago, and still proves to be a popular event.

“Thanks to our sponsors, advertisers, new volunteers and all who have turned out to support us – without them, our event simply wouldn’t be the success it is.”
