A PEEBLES mum who suffers from MS has been recognised for her work after raising over £3,000 by baking sweet treats in her spare time.

At the monthly meeting of the MS Society Peebles branch in the Tontine Hotel on Monday, September 4, Shelia Holness was awarded a commemorative brooch and certificate after collecting several thousand pounds for the group.

The mum-of-two used her spare time to bake a range of Scottish Tablet in her kitchen, which she sells during her part-time job in the shop at Harrisons Garage on Edinburgh Road.

The 53-year-old told the Peeblesshire News: "I'm shocked, yet delighted to receive this award for my work. I started this five years ago as a little bit of fundraising, and was overwhelmed at the positive response from locals about my tablet.

"For every £500 I'd raise, one would be donated to the MS Society, and the next lot to Cancer Research, then the next lot to MS and so on. Since starting this in 2012, I've collected over £3,000 for this wonderful charity.

"No sooner after making a batch and selling it, I was getting requests from folk to make more and more and was overwhelmed with the amazing response as demand continued to rise over the years.

"Thank you to my MS group in Peebles for putting me forward for the award, and I'd like to say thank you to all those who have bought my tablet and helped contribute to such an amazing cause."

MS Society member Claire George added: "Shelia really is a remarkable woman, and as a result of all her fundraising and work for the MS Society, the Peebles group got together and arranged for her to get a Shining Star Award. Well done Shelia, we're all very proud of her work."
