PEEBLES was lit up on Hogmanay evening with a wave of shimmering flames as 1,500 townsfolk and visitors took part in the annual torchlight procession.
The event, organised by Hillside Outside, had been threatened with cancellation in November until an appeal in the Peeblesshire News saw more than 20 local companies stepping in to make sure the procession could go ahead.
Volunteers across Peebles rallied to assist the organisers, and ensure the evening went smoothly.
Visitors from all over the UK and several European countries enjoyed a walk through the Tweeddale town, lit by flaming torches.
Event organiser Neil Dalgleish said: “It’s fantastic to have so many people take part and to welcome so many visitors to the town.
“This isn’t organised by an official tourism organisation, it’s just the people of our special town getting together to make a great evening at the end of the year, for ourselves and our visitors.” And feedback from visitors topped off a perfect evening.
One participant said: “It was our first visit to Peebles – what a beautiful town with such a friendly community. It’s such a fabulous tradition to see out the old year. Scotland really does know how to do New Year’s Eve.”
Proceeds from the event will go to two charities, Action For ME and the ME Association.
