PEEBLES Poultry and Bantam Club hosts its 30th championship show this weekend.

The event is set to be the biggest yet, with the club also holding its first regional championship egg show.

A total of 1,500 entries have been received, reaching the maximum capacity for the Walkershaugh Community Centre venue. The figure includes 955 pens of competitive entries; 26 selling pens; 330 plates of eggs; 173 challenge; nine poultry artwork and 25 poultry photographs.

Hazel Dickson, secretary and treasurer of the show, told us: “Many of the exhibitors who had birds on championship row in 2016 are coming back with the hope of repeating their success in 2018. There are a record number of 172 exhibitors coming from across the whole of the UK.

“The majority of our judges selected for the championship show are Poultry Club of Great Britain panel judges.

“A new trophy has been donated by Mo Scott in memory of her late husband Jim for the Best Utility. Jim was the trophy manager for the show for many years and is very much missed by the committee. It’s fitting that his name will live on in the schedule forever.”

The show was due to mark its 30th competition last year, but an avian flu outbreak forced organisers to cancel the event.

The event takes place on Sunday from 1pm to 3pm.
