POLICE have given a further warning to shopkeepers after attempts to use more fake £50 notes were made this week in the Borders.

Earlier in the month five businesses in Galashiels were targetted by women using counterfeit Irish £50 notes.

On Wednesday two men attempted to hand over similar notes in Peebles at Costa, the BP Garage and the Esso Garage.

Staff at all three businesses contacted police.

Inquiries are ongoing to trace the males responsible and staff at retail premises are urged to watch out for fraudulent notes like these.

The first suspect is described as white, early 20s, tall with a slender build and wearing a blue ribbed padded jacket, jeans and tan coloured footwear. He was carrying a Costa bag.

The second suspect is described as white, early 20s and wearing a white and black zipped tracksuit top, white t-shirt, blue jeans and white trainer. He was also carrying a Costa bag.

Both men spoke with Irish accents.

Constable Liam Myers of Galashiels Police Station said: “We are keen to speak to anyone who has information about these individuals or who can otherwise assist us with our investigation.

“We would also advise retail workers to remain vigilant when provided with a £50 note and have a colleague or manager also check the note for authenticity. If you're unsure do not accept a note as payment and contact police immediately."

Anyone with information can contact Galashiels Police Station via 101 and quote incident number 1267 of February 21. Alternatively, an anonymous report can be made to the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
