SOME schools in the Borders are expected to remain closed on Monday.

A Yellow (Be Aware) warning for snow is in place until 11.55pm on Saturday for the whole of the region – with an additional Yellow warning for most of area until late on Monday.

And council bosses are forecasting that some schools, particularly in rural areas, will remain shut.

Tracey Logan, chief executive of SBC said: "The past three days have been extremely challenging for the council and our partners and we continue to face difficulties, including strong winds and drifting snow and more snowfall forecast for the weekend.

"Our teams have been working hard 24 hours a day to clear snow from priority routes and we have brought in additional resources to help tackle secondary and town routes.

"The assistance of mountain rescue teams have also proved invaluable in helping us to provide health and social care services to vulnerable clients.

"Although the forecast for the weekend is better than the last couple of days, more snow will continue to make recovery from this situation challenging, but we will do all we can to have things back to as close as normal on Monday.

"This is weather dependent though, and we do anticipate that some schools will remain closed on Monday."

The local authority is carrying out a full assessment and information will be issued to parents on Sunday.
