A 23-year-old who crashed his mother's car into a tree while under the influence of drugs has been jailed for more than three months at Selkirk Sheriff Court.

Sean Mercer took the vehicle from the property in Horsburgh Street in Innerleithen but as he headed along the A72 towards Peebles lost control and collided with a tree during the early hours of September 2.

Passing motorists and emergency services who attended at the scene noted Mercer's speech was incoherent and the pupils in his eyes were pinpoint size.

He was taken to Borders General Hospital where blood samples were taken.

Defence lawyer Ross Dow said his client suffered a brain injury in the incident and the seriousness of the situation was not lost on him.

Mr Dow said: "He could have lost his life and so could other road users or pedestrians. He is very apologetic for his behaviour."

Mercer of George Street, Peebles, pleaded guilty to several motoring offences including driving while under the influence of drugs.

He was jailed for 100 days as well as being disqualified from driving for two years.
