THE Met Office has warned that Thunderstorms on Friday (June 1) could bring sudden flooding to the Scottish Borders.

The forecaster has issued a yellow (be aware) warning, which will come into effect from 9am until 10pm on Friday, plus a second yellow warning for rain from 11am until 9pm on Saturday, June 2.

THE Scottish Enviornment Protection Agency (SEPA) has also issued a flood alert for the Borders, with residents warned of a chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, the weather could mean that some train and bus services could be delayed or cancelled.

The latest forecast also warns that spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. There is also a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.

The Met Office said: "Early afternoon thunderstorms are expected to become slow-moving and merge together to produce some larger and more persistent areas of thunderstorms.

"This will lead to torrential rain with 30-40 mm of rain possible in an hour and a good chance of as much as 60-80 mm rain in 2-3 hours in some places.

"As well as this, frequent lightning and large hail are possible."
