CELEBRATING the Beltane Festival in his hometown of Peebles this week – and proudly marching with fellow members of the Silver Band – was a dream come true for Graham Hamilton.

And it was all made possible after a desperate plea to former school friend, Shona Haslam.

The Peeblesshire News has previously reported the Hamilton family’s hard-fought battle to have the rejected visitor's visa of their Filipina domestic helper Tes overturned.

The Hamiltons, who live in Hong Kong, were devastated at the thought of Tes not being able to join them on holiday.

But a little help from a friend, who now just happens to be the leader of Scottish Borders Council, made for a happy ending.

Upon hearing Graham’s plea, Councillor Shona Haslam immediately called for help from the Secretary of State for Scotland MP David Mundell to help. He, in turn, contacted the immigration minister to review the application.

And at the eleventh hour, the family’s wish was granted. They have been enjoying the week’s festivities, and also made time to meet up with the pair who made it all happen.

Councillor Haslam told the Peeblesshire News: "When I saw Graham’s request for help to get Tes to the Beltane, I had to get involved. David intervened in the case and asked the immigration minister to look again. Following this we heard the great news that Tes had been granted a visa and was on her way. It was all a bit last minute but all worked out well in the end.

"It is fantastic to see a positive result and it is great seeing the family enjoying themselves this week."
