YOUNG entrepreneurs from a Peebles primary school have tuned one pound into several hundred and donated the money to a community event which has given them lifelong childhood memories.

The Kingsland pupils not only proved to have amazing community spirit, they displayed fantastic enterprising skills creating mini businesses.

And the children decided to give their hard-earned cash to Peebles Beltane Festival, presenting a cheque to this year’s Cornet Elect Gregor McGrath.

It was a fitting contribution from Kingsland, where this year’s Beltane Queen Katy Blackwood hails from.

Proud headteacher Jacqueline Wilson said: "The children were given a challenge this year to ‘grow £1’. They were each given one pound and encouraged to use their skills and talents to grow it more.

"We have been learning about our community and ways that we can make a difference. We have been looking at how the needs and wants of people within our community are met.

"We discovered these differ depending on the age and stage you are at in your life. One thing we realised is how important the Beltane is to the lives of everyone living in Peebles.

"In Primary 3 /4 and Primary 4 classes we created lots of businesses including bake sales, sponsored bike rides, pet sitting and even hosting a comedy show.

"We know that lots of effort and money is needed to make the Beltane a success each year, and we hope that what we have raised will make a big difference."
