A FORMER Peebles High pupil has launched a final fundraising push to achieve his childhood dream to teach rugby in Fiji.

Since revealing his plans in the Border Telegraph back in April, Robert Matthews, from Cardrona, has raised £1,400 of the £2,000 needed for his two-month trip in September.

He plans to teach English and carry out rugby training with the charity Think Pacific.

The 17-year-old, who plays for Peebles Rugby Club’s Under 18s team, is hopeful he will hit his target in time.

And, during a break in pre-season training last week, Robert was presented with a cheque for £100 from the Rugby Club by Peebles RFC President, Mark Clancy.

Robert told us: “My fundraising for Fiji has been going very well, especially thanks to the great support of the rugby club – not only with the generous donation but also by allowing me to do raffles at events such as the Sevens. With only about six weeks until I leave, I have raised a total of £1,460, leaving me with £340 left to raise.

And the teenager hopes an upcoming fundraiser in Peebles will help him to score his fundraising goal.

“The next event I have planned is bag-packing at the Tesco supermarket in Peebles, although a date has not been sorted it will take place within the next month.

“I’d also like to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped me, from their donations to even volunteering to help with some of my fundraising events over the last few months.

“Thanks especially to my family, Peebles rugby club, Peebles High School and my girlfriend for all their help and support.”
