FORMER Manchester United goalkeeper Alex Stepney was one of the guests at the Cornets Speakers Night in the Municipal Hall at Biggar.

The event has long been a firm favourite for many and this year’s was no exception such was the quality of the speakers involved.

Stepney provided an insight into his goalkeeping life in games against the best the 70s could offer including Eusebio, Denis Law, the Charlton brothers, Nobby Stiles and the like.

Chaired by the indefatigable Meikle Jackson, whose own brand of humour makes the event a 'must-not-be- missed’ by itself, the first speaker was Sanquhar man Darren Shaw who, after less than 24 hours notice, provided an entertaining speech.

The final speaker Jim Lavery, from Belfast, had the assembled party in stitches from start to finish with a huge range of stories and anecdotes covering a vast array of topics.

Al Stewart proposed the vote of thanks and thanked Sherlock Caterers for an excellent dinner; the three guest speakers; Neg and Kevin for the bar; Meikle for his chairmanship; the Biggar Cornets who helped with the general organisation of the evening and of course the 120 or so diners who attended to support the Cornets Club.
