A LOCAL schoolgirl wore pink as she joined in a special event to raise public awareness of breast cancer.

Lucy Low, from Biggar High School, was completing her work experience with Clydesdale MSP Aileen Campbell when she joined in the Wear It Pink event in the Scottish Parliament.

She met First Minister Alex Salmond as MSPs for constituencies and regions across Scotland came together to support the event arranged as part of breast cancer awareness month.

Organisers Breast Cancer Campaign fund innovative breast cancer research, bringing together the brightest minds to share knowledge to produce better, quicker results to overcome and outlive breast cancer.

As of June this year, Breast Cancer Campaign funds 90 research grants throughout the UK and Ireland, worth over £13 million. It currently funds seven grants in Scotland worth £1,354,320. Breast Cancer Campaign has launched the campaign 'spreadtheword to stop the spread’, to highlight the need for body checking and awareness of early signs.

Ms Campbell said: “I was delighted to attend the event with Lucy to raise awareness of the Breast Cancer Campaign. I look forward to wearing pink again on Friday, October 24 - the simple touch of a pink tie or hairband boosts the campaign that needs support in local communities to save lives.

“More than 1,000 women in Scotland die from breast cancer every year, this is a sad fact that we can change. Raising awareness is key to ensuring less women are left to suffer through this horrible disease.

“I hope Clydesdale can go pink on the 24th with non-uniform days, bake-sales, tea parties – please get inspired by fundraising ideas at www.wearitpink.org! It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month and every effort to reach out to women is invaluable.”
