A BORDERS MSP has repeated calls for rural phone boxes to remain open in the Borders.

MSP John Lamont has made the calls as phone operator BT has confirmed a number of payphones earmarked for closure in the Highlands will remain open because of poor mobile coverage in the area.

In September, BT announced it was to consult on plans to close 104 of the 161 public payphones in the Scottish Borders due to a fall in usage.

Recently, Highland Council was told that they have removed three phone boxes from the proposed closure list because there is poor mobile coverage in the area.

John has written to BT, urging them to apply the same test to the Borders and rule out closures where mobile phone coverage is poor.

John Lamont MSP said:  “I was very concerned by the proposal to close nearly two thirds of phone boxes in the Borders. Although usage is understandably falling, many provide an important and sometimes lifesaving service for rural communities.

“Elsewhere in Scotland, BT has ruled out closures of three payphones. At the very least, BT should rule out the closure of any in locations where mobile phone coverage is poor, which would save a number in the Borders, such as the Steele Road payphone.

“It is Scottish Borders Council’s responsibility to make the case for the retention of payphones and so I would encourage anyone who is concerned about these plans to make their feelings known to the council.”
