A PEEBLES mum has vowed to complete her city to city charity walk after pulling out nearly halfway due to an injury.

Earlier this year, Marianne Currie lost two stone in preparation for her charity trek from Edinburgh to Glasgow, walking 248 miles over 185 hours.

The Peeblesshire News previously reported that her inspiration to take up the challenge, with the aim of collecting £500 for the British Heart Foundation, came after several of her friends were affected by heart attacks.

The 34-year-old, who lives in Drumelzier, set off from the capital on the 30-hour 100km charity trek, with a large group of walkers at 8am on July 22, but after 26 miles, had to pull out at the Falkirk Wheel after picking up an injury.

Marianne told us: "I started off with a very large group for first mile or so then went off alone. Made first checkpoint (18.7 km) in good time.

"For the last three miles before I stopped I was in a lot of pain. I was limping and almost dragging my leg the whole way. It drizzled most of the way until around the 30k mark when the heavens opened. I'd never seen such a downpour before. The weather caused mayhem, and gave me blisters.

"I arrived at the Falkirk wheel where I met the medics who told me I had shin splints and advised me that I was not to go on as I would do myself more damage.

"After hearing that news, I was devastated to have to pull out, but I was not alone - out of 220 walkers who had signed up for the challenge, only 88 managed to complete it.

"I raised £586.54 but I'm determined to complete it and will be back next year along with my husband John."

Following some time to rest over the summer, Marianne got a new puppy, and is back walking every weekend with her three dogs.

She added: "Thanks to each and every person that took the time to sponsor and support me. Special thanks to Robyn Keddie for holding a bake sale and to Andrew Currie Slaters for sponsoring me."
