OFFICERS in Peebles have said they will be carrying out an antisocial behaviour initiative in the coming weeks, after police were called out to several cases involving youths and alcohol in the last month.

In the latest Peebles police report, which covers the period between September 14 and October 12, it highlighted seven cases involving youths and alcohol in areas across the town.

On September 15, September 22, and October 7, calls were received regarding youths causing a disturbance on Tweed Green. When officers attended the scene on each occasion, the youths had disappeared.

On September 23, police attended three incidents, one regarding the theft of alcohol from Tesco, with enquiries ongoing, and two in relation to youths causing a disturbance at School Brae.

Enquiries are also ongoing in relation to a theft of alcohol from RS McColls in the Old Town, which occurred on October 6, the suspects are described as youths.

At the latest meeting of Peebles Community Council on Thursday, October 12, chairman Leslie Turnbull, filling in for Lawrie Hayworth, said: "It is a shame that PC Sorrell couldn't attend the meeting tonight to discuss the recent cases.

"However, it is encouraging to hear of this initiative in the pipeline. The report also states that members of the public are encouraged to contact police if they see groups engaging in alcohol abuse."
