A GRITTER driver had a lucky escape after his vehicle overturned on the A72 near Peebles.

The accident happened near to the Peebles Hydro Hotel at around 6.20am this morning (Monday, December 18).

Cars were diverted, while lorries and buses were delayed for around an hour while the vehicle was removed.

A Scottish Borders Council spokesperson said: “A member of SBC’s Neighbourhoods team operating a footway gritter was involved in an incident alongside the A72 road near Peebles Hydro today (Monday, December 18) before 7am.

“The member of staff was cut out of the vehicle by the fire service and taken to Borders General Hospital as a precautionary measure and has since been discharged.

“The road was closed as a result but reopened around an hour later.

“The Council will look into the circumstances of the incident in due course.”
