Borders gripped by icy blast

THE current cold weather in the Borders looks set to continue for the next few days, with more snow and sub zero temperatures predicted.
Members of the public are being advised to take extra care on any journeys and refer to the Traffic Scotland website for further advice on road conditions.
The latest weather forecast is for further snow showers, heavy at times, continuing throughout today, with accumulations of two to five centimetres expected at lower levels away from the coast and 10cm or more on high ground. Widespread ice is predicted overnight tonight (Thursday).
On Friday, heavy snow showers are predicted, especially over hills. Icy stretches will develop on untreated surfaces. These conditions are expected to continue over the weekend and into early next week. The latest warnings can be viewed on the Met Office website.
Scottish Borders Council (SBC) insists it has prepared well for the cold snap – with stores of salt at full capacity and meetings taking place with partner agencies to plan ahead. These meetings will help to ensure that essential services are maintained during the poor weather and that the most vulnerable members of our communities are looked after.
Parents and carers are advised to listen to local radio for up-to-date information about any school closures. A number of schools closed early today. Through a risk assessment, headteachers will make the decision as to whether they believe their schools can open depending on the weather conditions in the area. This will be done as early as possible each morning.
Some day centres were closed today. Users and carers will be notified if the centres are going to be shut.
Bin uplifts will be continuing as normal, as far as possible. However, if your bin is not collected on your normal collection day due to adverse weather conditions, it will be collected on the next collection date noted on your personal calendar. Extra side waste will also be collected at this time.
Astroturf bookings at Earlston, Berwickshire and Eyemouth High Schools have been cancelled for tonight (Thursday) and tomorrow night (Friday).
General advice to members of the public at this time includes to check weather and roads updates before travelling and to adjust driving habits to take into account the bad weather.
It is also helpful at this time of year for local residents to check on elderly or vulnerable friends, family members or neighbours to ensure they are safe and warm.
