Brownies from the Borders, including 1st Caddonfoot Unit, joined around 4,000 Brownies from all over Scotland at a spectacular event to celebrate the Big Brownie Birthday at the Gleneagles Equestrian Centre.

Thirty four excited Brownies and ten adults travelled to Gleneagles for the Big Brownie Birthday Fun Day – a huge action-packed day of activities and workshops. The Brownies had the chance to try out fun and adventurous activities ranging from an inflatable obstacle course and giant slide, African drumming and circus skills to introductory sports sessions, such as long jumps and javelin.

In addition, there was invisible painting and the girls got to help build a massive Big Brownie Birthday cake courtesy of LEGO Friends - made out of 50,000 bricks, measuring 2.4 metres in diameter and featuring 100 candles.

Ashleigh, aged nine, said: “I really enjoyed going on the bouncy castles and doing the maze with my group - we had a brilliant day.” And Jenna, also nine, added: “It was really fun doing the chemistry workshop and I enjoyed all of the bouncy castles. I loved it and wished we could have stayed longer!” Adventures like the Big Brownie Birthday Fun Day are just part of the range of activities, challenges and exciting opportunities open to Brownies in the Galashiels area. Girls take part in a hugely varied weekly programme, incorporating activities such as stargazing, world issues and science.

Leader Irene Sandie said: “The girls had a really amazing time. There was the chance for the Brownies to try out lots of activities as well as expend a lot of energy on the inflatables and it was the perfect way to celebrate the Big Brownie Birthday.” For more information about Girlguiding Scotland – the leading charity for girls in Scotland - log on to www.girlguidingscotland.org.uk.
