VANDALS appeared to have swapped sides in the run up to the independence referendum - after targeting the No campaign this week.

Tweeddale Conservative councillors Gavin Logan and Keith Cockburn revealed they have been the latest victims.

Last month we reported that Tweeddale SNP councillor Willie Archibald had a Yes sign forcibly ripped away from his property and there were several other attacks on pro-independence advertising.

“It doesn’t seem to matter which side of the fence you are on, it seems that some people simply don’t like anyone to make their views known,” said Councillor Logan.

He has twice had No signs stolen from a wood at the back of the garden at his home in Clovenfords.

“I’ve had the sign damaged as well as being taken,” he said. “But this will not stop me - they are simply wasting their time. I will not give up and will keep putting the sign back. Everyone is entitled to make their views known whichever side they are on.” Councillor Cockburn was upset to discover that a no sign erected at Eddleston had the middle cut out of it.

He said: “It sends out a disgusting view to voters and does not give them the right message. It is very smallminded. It has shown quite a dark undercurrent. It seems that people cannot abide seeing other people’s signs and it is totally unnecessary.

“I am not sure that it’s retaliation for what happened to the other attacks last month - it could be just wanton vandalism.

“I am all far arguing our case with the yes voters but we do not need something like this - it’s a different kind of mentality and not something you want to see in Peeblesshire.”
